Subject Description

Art Design will captivate students who are curious about creative, practical problem solving using the conventions of Graphic Design. 

Students will explore illustration, photographic and sculptural processes alongside computer skills to build a client brief. Using Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and Indesign, students will develop an understanding of layout and type integration informed by the work of established designers.

WHAT WILL STUDENTS LEARN? 

Use a local curriculum context using authentic practical hands-on problem solving

Be given or develop a client brief 

Learn Photography and Illustration for marketing of the client brief and Fine Art purposes

Develop conceptual thinking and design techniques for logos, posters, tote bags & T.shirts

Develop Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and Indesign skills (future focussed)

Find opportunity and support in the Art room where you have the freedom to express your ideas and work creatively with access to specialist design equipment and studio space.


Students will be offered 2 internals and complete an external portfolio.

  • There are also a wide range of courses available for those wanting to follow a creative digital pathway in the future.

Visual skills are essential for a sophisticated workforce, so by studying Art Design you will gain an education in the vital skills of learning to see and develop the ability to interpret and critique our image-saturated world.

Subject Overview

Term 1
In this an integrated foundation course of Art Design, students will gain many future focused skills. The whole year is project based and you will start with developing a client brief for a Eco Restoration project. Students will generate their own imagery (1.2 and 1.3), analyse established designers work, and apply their ideas through the action of drawing, illustrating, photography and designing through an independent workbook practice and folio (1.4).

Recommended Prior Learning

It is recommended that you have had some experience in Art and/or Design Technology in the junior school.
