Subject Overview
Term 1
Pepeha/ Mihi - じこしょうかい
Within this unit, we explore the concepts of Whakapapa, Whānau and Pepeha to expand on our prior learning of discussing the things about us that are important. This involves:
- Discussing where we come from and the things that are important to our heritage.
- Learning how to share more expanded information about our selves and others.
- Exploring how different cultures introduce themselves and the cultural importance of how to do this appropriately.
Turangawaewae - A place to stand
The places that shape us and that we connect with are deeply important. We will explore what places are important to us and how we can navigate and show someone around these special places. This will include:
-Learning how to navigate around a locations
- How to give and receive directions in Japanese.
- Why places hold special significance in different cultures
Term 2
Kura - Our School
School is a huge part of your life, let's learn to talk about it! We will explore what your daily school life looks like, your opinions about your subjects and school, and what school/education looks like in different parts of our country and the wider world!
Manaakitanga - Events planning/discussion
Looking after people is a concept that is important in Japan and in Te Ao Māori as well. Through this unit, we will look at the importance of how to plan an event in other cultures and how to discuss this event after it has happened.
Term 3
Hauora - Wellbeing in daily life
Do you like to study every night or prefer to watch TV and relax? We will learn to discuss how caring for your well-being looks for every person and what we can do to take care of it going forward.
ā mua - the future
Maybe you know exactly what your goal for the future is, maybe you are still figuring it out. We will explore what jobs and future goals you might be aspiring for and how to discuss this in Japanese.
Term 4
Revision for NCEA externals
This will involve preparing for your listening and reading external assessments while learning different tips and tricks to show off your knowledge in the externals.
