Subject Description

LEVEL 2 ART DESIGN*new

“Good design is obvious. Great design is transparent.” Joe Sparano

Art Design as a subject can teach you very valuable skills that will prepare you for the world and a wide variety of careers in the future.

As an Art Design student at St Mary’s College, they will experience practical hands-on problem solving which will equip them with the necessary skills to think creatively and logically and to take advantage of emerging technologies. Students’ will try various illustration, photographic and sculptural processes alongside gaining skills on the computer to build your client brief. They will be encouraged to think outside the box while still learning to use and understand the importance of the conventions of design.

When students study Art Design at Year 12 they will:

  • Choose their own client brief and use this to re-brand their identity through a range of design, photography and illustration (fine art based) tasks.

  • find opportunity and support in the Art room where you have the freedom to express their ideas and work creatively with access to
specialist design equipment and studio space.

  • Develop an understanding of layout and type integration and 'great design' by looking at established designers' work and applying these ideas to your own work.

  • Understand and create photography specifically for your client brief and design products

  • Develop critical thinking and the ability to interpret the world around you.

  • Develop and extend design techniques, research skills, develop Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and Indesign skills and conceptual thinking for further
art study at tertiary level in a range of design, technology, architecture and art disciplines.

  • benefit from enhanced well-being and improved health and happiness – taking Art Design as a subject
is a creative outlet for releasing the pressures of studying as well as those of everyday life.
