Level 2 Pathways

Option 1: Te Kura
Students can choose a subject or course that is not taught at SMC. These courses are delivered online. Have a look at the list provided below.
Option 2: Healthcare
Assisted learning in the Healthcare industry. This can be a gateway course through Careerforce, Porse,Youthline and Sign language. These courses are usually a mix of theory and work placements of 5/10 weeks.
Option 3: Work Experience
A flexible opportunity to experience time with an employer of your choice. Pathway into training or employment.
Option 4: Gateway
This subject is ideal for students who enjoy working at their own pace, are interested in exploring pathways beyond school and who want a flexible subject that supports them to learn. It offers Level 2 credits through a mix of three components: classroom based learning, work placements and short courses. The classroom based component focuses on Job Preparation Standards such as Career Planning and CV writing. The work placement component involves gaining credits whilst working on the job. e.g. at The Warehouse. You attend a placement one school day a week for five weeks. The short courses component offers opportunities to attend short courses at polytechs or gain skills in Health and Safety. Gateway gives the students great way to explore future careers and directions.
Option 5: Star Courses
A range of courses that can be studied at Whitireia/Weltec and through other ITO providers. These are taster courses that allow the student to experience a vocational pathway option. Usually involves 1 day per week for 5 weeks or a 2 day course.
Option 6: Trades Academy
A range of courses delivered through Whitireia/Weltec. The student is committed to being at Whitireia for 1 day a week for the year.
Option 7: External Providers
Occasional one-off courses eg barista, barbeque training, first aid and health and safety courses. These courses are generally one to two days long and carry a number of credits with them. Students gain great work skills and they look great on a CV.
All subject selections are provisional only and are subject to:
- meeting any course entry requirements
- minimum class sizes
- the availability of teaching staff
and the final decision is at the discretion of the Head of Learning Area for that subject.
