Level 2 History

Subject Description

Teacher in Charge: Ms S. Lamond.

Understanding the past helps us understand the world we live in today.

Our Year 12 History course is based on the theme Responding to Challenge - how political and social turmoil has shaped our world.

The contexts we study  are based on this. Student choice determines the final selection of topics.

  • Protest in Aotearoa New Zealand.
    - case studies include anti-Vietnam War, 1981 Springbok Tour, Homosexual Law Reform, anti nuclear campaigns, Māori land rights and the Second Wave of Feminism.
  • The rise of nuclear superpowers - USA and USSR - The world on the brink of World War III
    - case studies include the Cuban Missile Crisis, building of the Berlin Wall, Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and the Vietnam War.

Level 2 History builds on the skills developed at Level 1. These include analysing primary and secondary sources, recognising perspectives, recognising significance, analysing causes and consequences, and undertaking research.

Recommended Prior Learning

Level One History is not a prerequisite. A good attitude and an inquiring mind is.

History is a literacy based subject.

It is best suited to students who have gained NCEA Reading and Writing Literacy credits.

Contributions and Equipment/Stationery

Students require a laptop as much of the learning is online.
Basic stationery - a folder and refill - is also required for writing and storing notes and activities.

Pathway

History is a very versatile subject. It supports multiple learning and career pathways.
Many History students go on to pursue careers in areas including law, journalism, policy development and research. History skills are transferable in many other areas including medicine, commerce, management, arts and anthropology.
